Adan Alipio: Yes. Are you behind on your car payment? They can not tell anyone what your situation is, they would be breaking the law. They use the references to track you down though.
Blythe Noreiga: References are people the lender can contact if you are not making payments and cannot get in touch with you. The worse your credit, the more references you usually have to have. If you default on the loan and they want to repo the car, they can contact someone who knows where you are and how to find you.
