Burt Stoecklin: Yes, absolutely.Unfortunately many people attempt to prevent sex education in schools, despite the impact of this being very clear when looking at issues like unintended pregnancy rates, STD rates, and statistics on rape or sexual assault - head to the Health categories here to see lack of basic sex ed or the Singles category here to see ignorance of consent. When I was in school (UK) we had sex ed in middle school which covered reproduction in animals and plants which briefly included humans, the 'girl talk' for girls-only carried out by a Tampax representative when we were in middle school, and then real sex ed in high school which is better than a lot of US sex ed but still far from ideal.I support sex education throughout school starting from primary school. Kids in primary school should have age-appropriate education so they know basics like the names of their sexual anatomy, masturbation, consent, and basic hygiene - in order to help protect them fro! m child sex offenders as well as to help maintain their health and give them the basics to build upon later. Then reproduction and menstruation talk to all students of all genders in middle school, moving onto more complex discussions in high school about consent, safer sex, birth control, abuse, healthy relationships, pregnancy and childbirth, and also sexual pleasure. While at it at high school age they should give out free condoms and ensure they have access to safer sex and contraceptive resources - e.g. telling people how to access contraception and explaining how to go to a gyno or sexual health clinic as well as what testing etc. involves, also how to get help if they're raped or abused too. ALL OF THIS should be going on at home but we know it isn't, either because parents are scared (be it scared of having these conversations or scared it'll somehow encourage their kids to have sex) or as they're just as ignorant as their kids! If kids aren't getting sex ed at home! schools need to step-in, and as long as you're teaching your ! kids what they *NEED* (and are entitled to learn) at home then you've no reason to fear sex ed in schools....Show more
