higher education vs. serving your country?

Dorris Homola: I can understand your point of view, but it is based more on rumor and legend than actual facts.Fact: 75% of all High school grads will attend some type of college.Fact: 50% of them will drop out in the second yearFact: currently it takes an average of 6 years to complete a bachelors degree.Fact; the average college grad owes about 60,000 in student loans, credit cards and other bills when they graduate.welcome to the real world (and please don't take something like political science or business administration, you are doomed to be unemployed when you graduate)Army: get paid, get laid, and when you finish you get raves!...Show more

Chet Nozick: Well believe it or not I left a scholarship ride at cornell (Ivy League, I got in because my sat's were off the chart and I was an all star QB in HS, so they wanted me) and joined the Marines after 9-11. I made it thru scout sniper school and thru Recon school. I served in Iraq for two 12 month tours and was in! Afghanistan doing sniper training for their indigenous forces. I also did some black work while there. I finished my active duty in 2007 and just finished my degree (econ) in January....so you can do both. It just depends on how intensely you are drawn to one or the other. Regardless, good luck....Show more

Chet Nozick: do both, I served my country first and then went to college

Neely Youngblut: I was in ROTC in college, so I was able to do both, I simply put off serving my country until after I had finished college. There's nothing wrong with that, and the armed forces is facing a shortage of junior officers. Some guys I went to school with were concurrently serving in the Reserves, the ANG, or the ARNG.

Victor Macallister: Do whatever you want to do. This is America. We don't have a Central Planning Government (yet).

Jude Kennelly: The Army provides roughly $4500 per year for education expenses, so you can actually go to college while you're in th! e Army, and they pay for it.There is no reason you can't do bo! th at the same time.

Lino Cawthorne: Why do people feel that you can't do both? ROTC will help pay for college.

Chanda Wittwer: If someone don't serve , there won't be any need for higher education.

Derrick Cacioppo: Do both. Go serve, if you dig it, stay. if not, use the MGIB to go to school. Or Go to school while in or before you go in, and get your Commission become an officer, and theres your job security>me? i served. through the first gulf war actually. military life Wasnt for me, did my time, thanks got out, got my education but have a higher respect for those who continue to serve.the military isint a bunch of grunts shooting guns yelling HOO RA... the AF for instance is VERY high tech. Aka i served my country as a priority, and used the experience to further my education at the same time. Bootstrapped half my college becuase of the free training.>> Im saying i diddnt prioritize one or the other. i did BOTH as a priority. I served my country and ! got my education at the same time. they were BOTH equal prioritys to me, and the AF was the best place to do it....Show more

Terrell Lawman: I did both. I spend 11 years in the AF. It took me about 7 to finish the Bachelors (Business) and now I'm working on my MBA and will be done with that in August.Personally though, someone could still be patriotic and go to school versus serving. I'd even recommend going to school first for those wanting to serve because then they can become an officer or at the very least, open up some more doors....Show more

Florencia Manolakis: I'm asking YOUR priotiy.

Ardelia Liptow: Join to keep the freedoms of our people down the road so they can go to college. Our soldiers don't get the credit they deserve anymore. Since Vietnam, they are labeled as baby killers. I've seen it first hand at airports when i was picking my cousin up after getting back from Iraq. We should be thanking them for everything we have today.

Jayson ! Brod: Omg, I'm asking what YOUR priotity IS.You mean to tell me that MO! ST of you are joining the military and getting a higher education?!

Marcelina Schossow: Omg, I'm asking what YOUR priotity IS.You mean to tell me that MOST of you are joining the military and getting a higher education?!

Rebbecca Sorkin: You can do both, and be a better man for it, if your scared just say so...

Melvin Nakama: i rather join the Marines

Daren Ventrice: Why do you have to join the military to serve your country?Seems kind of like an idea that lacks imagination.I would think anyting like Habitat for Humanity is serving your country as well.
